LLMS.txt is a simple Markdown-formatted text file placed at your domain root (e.g. https://ad-ops.hu/llms.txt) that guides AI systems to the most important content on your website. For WordPress, it can be created in 3 ways: using a dedicated plugin, manually via FTP, or with a simple PHP snippet in your theme’s functions.php. The standard was proposed in September 2024, and by 2026 an increasing number of AI crawler systems and developer tools take it into account.
What Is LLMS.txt and Why Do You Need It?
LLMS.txt was proposed by Jeremy Howard (fast.ai) in September 2024 with the goal of providing AI models and crawlers with a structured, easy-to-process content map of a website.
Robots.txt controls access: it tells crawlers which URLs they may visit. LLMS.txt, by contrast, does not block or allow anything — it is a content recommendation: it shows AI systems which of your website’s pages are the most important and trustworthy ones worth processing.
Why is this useful? If you’d like to understand how AI Overview works and what it draws from, we covered it in detail in this article. AI systems — from Google AI Overview to ChatGPT — crawl the internet through their own crawlers. The LLMS.txt file is a voluntary guide showing them which content you consider most relevant.
By late 2026, Claude (Anthropic) and numerous developer tools (e.g. Cursor, Perplexity) actively read LLMS.txt files. ChatGPT and Gemini do not yet reliably take it into account at inference time — but this is expected to change.
LLMS.txt vs robots.txt – What's the Difference?
Many people confuse the two, but they serve fundamentally different purposes.
Robots.txt also applies to AI crawlers: if you block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or Google-Extended user agents, those crawlers cannot reach your site. LLMS.txt, on the other hand, only speaks to those who have already arrived — it shows them what’s worth exploring.
| robots.txt | llms.txt | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Access control | Content recommendation |
| Format | Allow/Disallow rules | Markdown (H1, H2, links) |
| Mandatory? | No (but widely accepted) | No, voluntary |
| Can block? | Yes | No |
| Location | Domain root | Domain root |
If you want to completely exclude AI crawlers, that must be done in robots.txt — not in LLMS.txt.
The Structure of an LLMS.txt File
LLMS.txt is simple Markdown, with a few required and recommended elements:
# [Your website name]
> [Brief description of what your website does – 1-2 sentences]
## [Section intro, e.g. "Key articles"]
- [Page name](https://domain.com/slug): Short description of the page's content.
- [Page name](https://domain.com/slug): Short description.
## [Second section, e.g. "About us"]
- [Page name](https://domain.com/slug): Short description.
The only required element is the H1 heading with the website name. Everything else — the blockquote description and H2 sections — is recommended but not mandatory. Alongside LLMS.txt you can optionally add an llms-full.txt file, which concatenates the full Markdown content of all priority pages into a single file — one that AI models can ingest in a single request.
How to Create an LLMS.txt File for WordPress?
1. módszer: Plugin – automatikus és karbantartásmentes
A legegyszerűbb megoldás egy dedikált plugin, amely automatikusan generálja és frissíti az LLMS.txt tartalmát a közzétett bejegyzéseid és oldalaid alapján.
Method 1: Plugin – automatic and maintenance-free
The simplest solution is a dedicated plugin that automatically generates and updates your LLMS.txt content based on your published posts and pages.
Recommended plugin: Website LLMs.txt (free, wordpress.org)
- WordPress admin → Plugins → Add New
- Search: “Website LLMs.txt”
- Install and activate
- The plugin automatically makes the file available at
yourdomain.com/llms.txt - Verify: open
/llms.txtin your browser
An alternative is All in One SEO Pro, which also includes an LLMS.txt generator if you already use that plugin.
Advantage: updates automatically when new content is published; no FTP access required.
Disadvantage: the generated content may include irrelevant pages — not fully editable manually.
Method 2: Manually – FTP or hosting file manager
If you want full control over the file, create it manually.
- Create a text file named
llms.txton your computer (e.g. Notepad, VS Code) - Fill it in using the Markdown format shown in the previous section
- Upload it to the WordPress root directory (where
wp-config.phplives) via an FTP client (e.g. FileZilla) or your hosting control panel’s file manager - Verify:
https://domain.com/llms.txt
Advantage: full control over the content.
Disadvantage: does not update automatically — you must update it manually every time you add an important new page.
Method 3: PHP snippet – virtual file without a plugin
If you’d rather not install an extra plugin, you can serve the file virtually using a short PHP snippet. Create a mu-plugins/llms-txt.php file, or add it to your child theme’s functions.php:
add_action('init', function() {
if ($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] === '/llms.txt') {
header('Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8');
echo "# Ad-Ops Digital
";
echo "> Digital marketing agency – Google Ads, Meta Ads, SEO, AI optimisation.
";
echo "## Key content
";
echo "- [What is AI Overview?](https://ad-ops.hu/what-is-ai-overview-google-ai-search): How AI Overview works and what it draws from.
";
echo "- [AI optimisation](https://ad-ops.hu/ai-optimization): How we help businesses become visible in AI search.
";
exit;
}
});
Advantage: no FTP needed, no extra plugin, the code is version-controllable.
Disadvantage: page list must be updated manually; keep it in your child theme so it isn’t lost on theme updates.
What to Include – and What to Leave Out?
What to include:
- Main service or category pages
- Your most visited, highest-quality blog posts
- About / Contact page (to strengthen brand entity signals)
- A FAQ page, if it has its own URL
What to leave out:
- Every post — unnecessary noise that reduces the file’s usefulness
- Login, thank-you, or other system pages
- Noindexed pages
- Duplicate URLs (tag pages, archives)
The value of LLMS.txt lies in selectivity. A carefully curated file of 10–30 entries is worth far more than a 500-line auto-generated list.
Checking and Maintenance
After uploading your LLMS.txt file:
- Open
https://domain.com/llms.txtin your browser — it should display plain text - Check the format with the llmstxt.org validator
- Check whether Google Search Console shows any crawl errors for the URL
- If you’ve added new content to your site, update the file too (automatic with a plugin)
LLMS.txt is not a one-time setup — if your site grows actively, it’s worth reviewing and updating every six months.
If you’d like to better understand how to become visible in AI search, we covered the differences between SEO, AEO and GEO in detail in this article.
Creating LLMS.txt takes 15–30 minutes and is becoming increasingly important for visibility in AI search. If you want AI systems to highlight your most important content, it’s worth starting now. If you need help with the technical setup or AI optimisation, we’re happy to assist.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the LLMS.txt File Required?
No. LLMS.txt is a voluntary standard — not a required element of your website. Unlike robots.txt, it does not block or allow access; it simply provides content recommendations for AI systems. Currently it's most worth creating for those who want to improve their visibility in AI search engines and developer tools.
Which AI Systems Read the LLMS.txt File?
By late 2026, Claude (Anthropic), Perplexity, and numerous developer tools (e.g. Cursor, Copilot) actively read LLMS.txt files. ChatGPT and Google Gemini do not yet consistently take it into account at inference time — but adoption is growing steadily.
What Is the Difference Between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?
LLMS.txt is a content map: it contains links and brief descriptions of the most important pages. LLMS-full.txt concatenates those pages with their full Markdown content into a single file, which AI models can read in a single request. Generating llms-full.txt is more complex, but gives AI systems richer context.
Does LLMS.txt Affect Google's Traditional Rankings?
No. LLMS.txt is not an SEO ranking factor for traditional search. It does not improve PageRank, does not create backlinks, and Google Search Console does not track it separately. Its impact is felt in AI-based systems — for example, in which pages Claude or Perplexity cite in a response.
How Do I Check Whether My LLMS.txt File Is Correctly Formatted?
Open the domain.com/llms.txt URL in your browser — you should see plain text Markdown content. For format validation, use the online validator available at llmstxt.org. You can also use Google Search Console's URL inspection tool to check whether Googlebot can access the file.
