What is SPAM?
SPAM refers to unsolicited electronic messages, usually advertisements, promotions, or other unwanted content, including unwanted material uploaded to websites to mislead search engines.
SPAM can be annoying and disruptive, especially with the widespread use of email and electronic communication, as we can receive large amounts of such unwanted messages. While most commonly found in emails, SPAM also appears on other communication channels like phone calls or social media.
History
The term “SPAM” originates from a 1970s Monty Python comedy sketch. In the sketch, a restaurant menu features items that all contain Spam (Scientifically Processed Animal Matter).
Much like in the sketch, today’s spam is pushed on people in large quantities and unsolicited. Spam messages have existed since the early days of the internet, but they became a significant issue with the rise of email and social media.
Why is SPAM dangerous?
SPAM isn’t just annoying—it can be dangerous. It may lead to phishing attacks, and in many cases, contain malware or other malicious software.
The main dangers of email spam include:
- Attempting to download harmful software or viruses
- Trying to steal personal information from users
- Encouraging unsuspecting internet users to transfer money
Most SPAM emails are sent for business or marketing purposes, driven by financial motivations.
How to protect yourself from spam
- Use spam filters: Email providers typically have built-in spam filters.
- Block untrustworthy sources: Whether in email or on social media, you can block suspicious sources.
- Never click on unknown links: Avoid clicking on links or opening attachments in emails from unknown or untrusted sources, as they may contain viruses or malicious software.
- Be cautious of suspicious emails: If an email contains strange or suspicious elements—like spelling errors, unusual email addresses, or too-good-to-be-true offers—proceed with caution. These could be signs of spam.
Spam can pose serious security risks, and being vigilant is essential in protecting your personal data and devices.
