What is a Cookie?

A cookie, also known as an HTTP cookie or simply a cookie, is a small data file that a website stores in a user’s browser. Cookies primarily contain information about users who have visited the website. This information can include details like the frequency of visits, browser settings, or even login credentials.

History

Cookies were developed in 1994 by Lou Montulli, an employee of Netscape Communications. Their original purpose was to enable the use of digital shopping carts in online stores.

Initially, cookies were used to identify whether a user had visited the Netscape website before. All web browsers eventually supported cookies, and most users were unaware that such information was stored on their computers or that cookies even existed.

Over time, cookies have evolved, and various types and uses have been developed. Today, cookies are not only used for identification but also for delivering personalized content and advertisements.

What does a cookie contain?

Cookies are small data files that help a website recognize you. When you visit a site, a data file is stored in your browser, acting as an identifier, for example, “User123.” Later, when you return to the site, the website checks this small file in your browser and recognizes you as the “User123” who visited previously.

At a minimum, a cookie must contain two things: a unique user identifier and some information about the user. Additionally, it may include other data, such as a code that helps you stay logged in even if you close your browser or turn off your computer.

Disabling cookies

Most web browsers allow users to disable all cookies on their devices. However, doing so requires specific settings to be adjusted for each individual website.

As a result, some services and features may not function properly, such as the inability to create a user profile or log in.
